Would you paint the bricks around your fireplace?

As we painted the master bedroom over the weekend (thanks for the comments on the colors I was considering!), we spent a lot of time looking at the fireplace in the room.

Though the bedroom is quite big compared to our old one, there are so many doors that there's only one wall for a dresser. It makes sense to me to hang the TV over the fireplace so we can have the top of the dress free. Ultimately, I'd love to make the mantle a little more substantial and maybe even enclose some of the shelves on the built in bookcase so we could house the cable box in there so we can hang the TV. At that point, I think we'll tile the hearth and change out the insert/screen thing (how's that for precise language).

There are other more pressing projects on our "to do" list, so the mantle won't be done for a while. As we painted, I wondered if I should just slap a layer of white paint on the brick. I'm torn. I've never felt passionately about leaving brick uncovered, but I know some people thinking painting it is a horrible idea. So I went to Houzz to see examples of brick and painted brick fireplaces.

First, the painted brick fireplaces...

The brick in the bedroom is in pretty good shape, so I'm tempted to leave it alone for now. However, the images of the painted brick are so nice and bright. We have another brick fireplace that is almost certainly getting a coat of paint, so maybe I should leave this one untouched for now.

  1. Which is more your style? If it's painted then paint, if it's brick then don't paint, I woudln't worry about what others like, esp if it's for future resale. If it were me I would be using carrara marble to cover it.

    1. I keep debating...but you know I'll eventually put carrara on it. :)

    2. I like that idea!
I think that brassy grate has to go. But also, the brick fireplaces in your inspiration photos seem to have a nicer color to them than the brick in your bedroom. Maybe it's just a matter of cleaning, but if your bricks remain that color I think I would lean towards painting.

Also, I can't picture you staying with that tiny mantle :) Regardless of what you do, you're going to make it look fab!

    1. That one is sort of whimpy, isn't it? It's more of a shelf than a mantle.

  3. I would try cleaning the brick before you make any decisions. It may change the color or look of the brick and you may like it. Not a fun job though! I like exposed brick and painted brick so I think you can't go wrong with either choice!

    1. Good point. I'll try to clean it tonight. That might help. :)

  4. My personal preference is PAINT it!
makes the room look more "together"..
where the brick seem to draw attention!
but go with the choice which makes YOU most happy..
you are the one living with it..not us!

  5. My vote is that it depends on your design plans for the room. In the exposed brick photos there are colors tying the brick into the decor, whereas the painted brick was clearly done to match the rest of the room. Thus, would you prefer to try matching the brick in your decor, or would you rather forge ahead with a different vision and then paint the brick to match?

I agree it needs to be cleaned first though. Discovering just what the original color is would definitely impact my decision.

  6. It looks nice in the pictures you posted, but I've seen it look horrible in real life. I guess it's all about technique.

  7. The painted bricks look better in a bedroom.

  8. I would paint it black. Or maybe a deep charcoal/black/navy color. Racoon Fur or Deep Space come to mind. Mostly because of the brassy insert.
I giant-puffy-heart those colors combined with old brassiness.

  9. I can certainly relate to DIY fatigue but given the time and energy I would paint it. White or Silver crest might look good too.

  10. Paint the bricks! It's in your bedroom. I don't know about you, but I like my bedroom colors to have a calming/ peaceful effect. I think exposed bricks will be too harsh. Plus....it is a quick, and cheap, fix that will change the entire look of the area. Can't wait to see what you do! :)

  11. Can you take the gold cover screen thing off completely and just have it open? I think that will do a world of good. I think it'd look great either way. Are you going to leave it open so you can make a real fire in it or put something pretty and decorative in it like the birch logs?
