The end for an institution: Colony House Furniture is closing

I'm back on the road for another business trip (I'll have been home for two days in two weeks!) and I was shocked to see a commercial announcing that Colony House Furniture is going out of business.  Colony House has been a DC institution since 1937.

When I first moved to Virginia, I was a little frustrated with the options for buying furniture in the Charlottesville area.  At the time, I was a huge fan of companies like Baker, Hickory Chair, and Henkel Harris.  Aside from one store that carries Stickley, Charlottesville doesn't have a furniture store that carries high end furniture.

I made quite a few trips to Richmond and northern Virginia for furniture back then.  I spotted my coffee table during a floor sample sale at Colony House West (a Centreville location that closed) and bought it on the spot.  It's one of the few pieces that had stayed in my home through multiple phases in my decorating.

Thought I haven't been back in years, I always assumed Colony House would be there when it was time to furnish our future home.  I guess it's getting hard for high end furniture stores to stay in business.

  1.  I remember Colony House well as a child growing up in NoVa. Sad that it is going away. There is one high end store in Fredericksburg, Simms. It is a bit closer to C'ville than Arlington.

  2. I will truly miss this store there was an array of decorative items to use within a home.  Wow, I never would have thought going out of buisness would happen.  With this day and time everyone is taking a crunch.  My intent was to go online to order a ottoman from Henredon and realize the site was showing going out of business.  It is not many great furniture stores anymore.
