Baxter's first attempt at decorating

My golden retriever is an unusually good dog. He was house trained from day one and never chewed on any furniture as a puppy. He doesn't bark unless he's playing, can learn tricks or commands easily, and he pretty much likes every person and dog he meets. Imagine our shock at coming home to this yesterday:

I left a full bag of garbage in the kitchen. Many dog owners might say I was asking for this, but Baxter is almost 4 years old and he has never touched garbage before. Notice that he didn't even break the bag...he just pulled items out of it and tore them apart.

I wonder if anyone could see him having a ball tearing all this stuff apart in light of the fact that some of the scraps were right by the patio doors.

We told Bax to get on his mat while we cleaned up and he seemed so sad. We couldn't help but laugh at the mess. I wonder if our parents laughed at us after sending us to our rooms for doing something bad when we were little.

Hiding his head in shame. Yes, that's a pair of socks he procured from the laundry, too.

  2. Oh no! We have to keep our trash in a cabinet (under the sink) to keep our dog out of it. I'm impressed you made it four years without an incident. I wonder what tempted him this time? I think it's funny how dogs try to hide when they're in trouble--they know right away that they've done something wrong. They look so guilty and sad that I'm the one that feels bad in the end. Haha--they know just how to work those puppy eyes!

  3. HILARIOUS! Our little Stella looooooves the trash - specifically the bathroom trash. I finally caved and bought a lidded trash can! Funny Baxter!

  4. Oh my gosh, this is hilarious. I know, it's no fun to clean it up, but it's awesome to see another person's well-trained dog do the same thing that my otherwise-pretty-much-perfect dogs do. Yeah, if we ever leave a stray bag inside (lazy us) they do it. What's of particular note is that they take the "best"parts of the trash to their bed(s). So it's a whole-house ordeal to clean it up!

  7. Oh gosh, I hope he didn't eat anything bad. I had the same thing happen with my now deceased Westie, Lambchop. He never tipped over the trash until the time I threw away a rotisserie chicken carcass. I came home to find only a grease spot on the floor. He had eaten the bones and all. I feared the worse as I hear chicken bones can be deadly. Funny, there were no side effects except for an extra trip or two out to do some big business if you know what I mean.

  8. Aww, Baxter is too cute! It's so frustrating when our pets misbehave but it's so hard to stay mad at them!

  11. That was so funny. Our dog Max once took my knitting and went all over the house with it...every room, every chair leg, thru the staircase bannisters etc. It looked like a pack of kittens had been loose in the place. We could barely contain our laugher while "yelling" at him to go to his corner. The clean-up was a little easier but I did have to cut up the yarn. There was no saving it. I only wish I had taken a picture if it like you.

P.s. Can you delete having to enter an email to comment? Thanks.

  12. haha he definitely knows he's in trouble by the looks of the above picture. I read somewhere that when dogs do stuff like that it's because they are upset, bored or mad. Don't know if theirs any truth to that but Timmy definitely did something similar once and he had anxiety issues at the time.

  15. That photo of Baxter is so funny! Poor thing. He couldn't resist the temptation. He should meet my new puppy, Sh*thead the almost Homeless Dog.

  16. oh my god this reminds me of the time I left an entire bag of tortillas on the floor after grocery shopping. We were having a party and the bag had 10 pkgs of tortillas, well I ran out to drop something off and was gone 15 minutes TOTAL. Our fox terrier had opened each bag all over the house. There were tortillas EVERYWHERE and not just scattered but chewed and shredded. I was awful. He also ran when he saw us. Now its funny but at the time I had spent the entire day cleaning the house only to have to do it again. I guess I deserved it too since I left the bag on the floor never having any problem with this sort of stuff before.
