Sometimes, I don't want to be "handy"

Are you the "handy" one at your house? I am. Sometimes, I wish I wasn't.

I wish I wasn't in charge of giving my dad the correct tool during projects or didn't watch my mother work under the hood of the Chevy Citation we had when I was a kid. I wish the public schools in my town didn't mandate wood shop for all 7th graders. I wish I hadn't bought a toolbox and filled it. I wish I didn't know all the aisles at Lowes. I wish I didn't know how to hang a chandelier, find a stud, and switch out a faucet. If I don't know how to do something, I hit the web and read about it. By the third website, I usually have a handle on the task.

Sometimes, I'm tired. Sometimes, I'm not confident about doing something. Sometimes, I want someone else to take care of it.

  1. Bad day ? Me too! Painting a room with the help of my sister and its turning into a bad Laurel & Hardy sketch.

  2. You know what? You DON'T have to do everything. You don't. There's no law that mandates it.

When we built our house, there were a lot of things that we could have done ourselves, but decided not to, because we were busy and had so many things going on at once. I did not feel one bit guilty about paying one of the guys on the crew to do some freelance work for us on the weekends. It helped us better manage our time and focus on what we needed to be doing.

  3. And that's when you hire it out :)

I'm the handy one of the house too and sometimes it does get tiring. Luckily, my parents are really handy too so I can rope them into helping me out sometimes, and having extra help has been a lifesaver on more than one occasion.

If I can't get extra help for free though, and Mr. T won't/can't chip in, I wouldn't feel the least bit bad about hiring someone. Your time is valuable too!

  4. It's OK to hire someone out sometimes. I tend to want to try to do everything myself but I need to learn my limits, like putting up crown molding!

  5. I feel the same way! Especially when I ask my husband to fix something and he says, "But you're so good at it."

  6. SEriously, you don't have to be superwoman! I agree, sometimes it's ok to hire it out.

I can be handy, but Ryan is good at the more technical things...like fixing the lawnmower or making a door stop squeaking. My dad is super handy. So is my brother. He could practically build an entire house.

  7. You are a grown woman. You don't have to do anything you don't want to. It's okay to pay someone to do it for you sometimes. Think of it as stimulating the economy!

  8. I'm a firm believer in paying someone else to do things that need to be done. I have had to ban my fiance from trying to do certain things himself though.
