In the closet

I finally came out of my little funk yesterday and decided to organize my closet. This was one area that needed some serious simplification. After some ruthless purging, I had two tupperware bins of clothes that are destined for charity.

Speaking of charity, what do you think is the best place to drop off your cast offs? I used to send everything to the SPCA Rummage Sale, but I got yelled at the last time I went because I arrived at 1:50 PM and the end of intake there is at 2 PM. After that experience, I started going to Goodwill. I'm not really sure what Goodwill does with the money raised at their store, though.

Anyway, back to the closet. Here is the result of many hours of sorting, folding, and organizing.

Holy moly, I have too much stuff. Despite all of this, I probably wear the same 10-15 outfits to work. I have vowed to try to wear more of my wardrobe from now least until it snows. When it snows, all bets are off.

I put most of my summer stuff in the deep, bottom drawer of my large dresser, but put a few things up high, just in case I need them at some point in the winter. Who am I kidding? There is no way I'll be need my bathing suits for the next few months.

Do you see my one, solitary orange box? Aren't you proud of me for NOT putting it on display somewhere like some people do?

I wear exactly three pairs of those jeans and I almost never wear belts. Still, I couldn't toss any from either category.

I'm on a simplification kick, I think. Maybe I'll try to tackle one project per day to ward off any possibility of being accused of hoarding.

  1. 1. I think Goodwill is great - they seem to do a lot for helping people get back in the workforce - either if they are recovering from homelessness or from a disability. They're also EASY for dropoffs.
    2. I'd like to steal a few of your skirts.
    3. I giggled out loud at the caption about the orange box. :)
    4. If you only wear three of those jeans, what are you keeping the others for? Ask yourself what's the worst that could happen if you ditch a pair or two. Rather than trying to ditch a bunch, maybe try to just get rid of one pair of jeans now, and 2 or 3 belts only. Remind yourself that there are people out there who would be so greatful for a pair of good jeans. But then, I'm a hardcore declutterer, and can go overboard with guilt on people so I will shut up now!

  2. Hey, I'm proud of you for getting started. So many people don't even get that far. A girlfriend of mine in another state emailed me photos of her closet because it was so out of control and I talked her through it on the phone. Another time, I went to another blogger's house here in town to help with her closet. When I discovered that her wedding dress was in her closet -- she's been married almost 20 years -- we had to have a mini-intervention right then and there.

For clothes, I usually call AmVets to come pick up stuff.

As for what Jane said in #4 above, I couldn't agree more.

  3. Okay, I took another look at the jeans and I wear 5 pairs routinely. I can get rid of 2 that are old, straight leg jeans.

I'm probably about 4 lbs. away from being in the four remaining pairs. :)

  4. I am pretty ruthless in my closet but I hate clutter so at the end of the summer and winter I get rid of anything that I didn't wear that season. It keeps my closet very paired down though.

  5. WOW can you come do my closet next?!!!

    Luvs doll!

  6. I usually donate clothe that I haven't worn within the last 6 months including shoes. I'm big on donating to Goodwills I think they have a great thing going. Coats I donate to the Mission our local homeless shelter they are always in need.

  7. Way to go on the jeans! I am guilty of a stash of clothes in my closet that are a few pounds out of reach, too. :) The frugalist inside me can't bear the thought of having to buy new if I lose the weight!

  8. Yeah, its the weight thing. I know I'll never get down there, but .... can't bring myself to ditch the jeans.

  9. Your closet is so tidy! I know what you mean about not getting rid of stuff, even if you don't wear it. But it feels so good once you do! And then you can make room for stuff that you really love. :)

  10. I wish my closet looked like this- I'm jealous of your organization here. I must put that on my to-do list now :)
