It's my first blogiversary!

A year ago, I started this blog with some skepticism about my ability to keep it going. I had just done a guest blog post on Mrs. Limestone's blog and in her comments, she wondered why I wasn't blogging. I wasn't sure I could handle a personal blog (I have been writing a business blog since 2005), but Mrs. Lime's little comment gave me the encouragement I needed.

Since then, I've written 340 posts, shared 1,756 photos, and two videos (I hope that number will increase in the next year). I made it through my "busy season" at work just fine.

One of the best things that has happened as a result of this blog is that I feel as though I have a blogger family, a subset of the huge design blogsphere, that I know will cheer when a project turns out well and sympathize when one doesn't. Because of these people, I feel no pressure to be perfect, something I worried about when I first decided to throw together a blogger account.

Here's a quick look back at the five most popular blog posts I've written over the last year:
1. The Bathroom "post-model"
(before and after pictures of my bathroom)

2. Did I do that?
(when I bought my ghost chair on Legend Brewery inspired whim)

3. The search for dining chairs
(a run down of all the options I considered)

4. The Glidden vs. Benjamin Moore paint test
(Benjamin Moore won)

5. Converting rod pocket to pinch pleated drapes
(I hope no one considers me an authority on this...I'm not!)

Honorable mention: I Love Ewe, when I wrote about the purchase of some art.

Anyway, thanks for reading, following, RSSing, and commenting over the last year. I think the plan for the next year is to do more videos and possibly move the blog off Blogger and onto it's own URL. Does anyone have any strong opinions about that?

  1. Woo hoo! I think Olivia is my favorite :).

I have my own url through blogger... it only costs $10/ year and gives you the ability to have a personalized email address. Go for it!

  2. Congrats on the blogaversary!
hasn't the past year been such a fun, rewarding, enlightening and simply wonderful learning process? for me, as I approach my first anniversay of blogging, I look back and see all the ways I've grown personally, the beautiful new friends I've made..not to mention all the new stuff I've learned!
so again ..congratulations on this past year..
and many good wishes for another!
    warm sandy hugs..

  3. Congrats! We really did start out at the same time! Mine is coming up in about a week.

I really do think that the photo of the chairs and Olivia is my most favorite photo of your space. Ever.

  4. Congrats on your blogiversary! I do loooove that bathroom. Keep it up!

  5. Mazel Tov, Darling!

I can't wait to see what the next year holds.

  6. Happy Blogiversary!
Thanks for sharing all those great ideas!

  7. Happy 1 year! My comments are...whatever you do, it would be helpful if you were mindful of slower internet connections and/or computer processors. This means, resize your pictures before uploading them (the default on most cameras is something like 12 inches), remember that your video inserts tend to bring some people's computer to a halt for 5 minutes, and that javascripting and whatever is going on in a sidebar slows everything up, too.

I really enjoy your blog and have no loading issues (so far, though the videos do occasionally cause blips), and hope that if you "upgrade" you'll remember the people on last year's computer model!

  8. Happy blogiversary!!!! I'm so glad we are blog friends! And I am constantly inspired by your flutter of activity - always so impressed by how much you accomplish!

My two cents about the blog upgrade...(1) you can always buy a domain and redirect Blogger to it, without having to go off Blogger. That will save you $ hosting the blog elsewhere, and keep the ease of use Blogger offers. (2) Moving it (like I did off to a Bluehost-hosted Wordpress blog template) lets you customize as much as you want, but it can be time consuming and means you have to do a lot on your own. Just my opinion!

(spot on with your top 5 posts and honorable mention - my faves too!)

  9. Thanks, all!

Anon, my camera does not default to pictures as large as you've described. Being a techy person in my other life, I can tell you that a year old computer that is having trouble with this blog has a serious problem. It is not a problem on Blogger's side of things.

The only blog that people seem to have trouble with is Cote de Texas, probably due to the fantastic pictures that Joni shares. I think almost everyone will agree that it is worth the wait if you are on an old computer!

A special thanks for the advice about domains and moving off Blogger. I will probably continue to ask advice about that until I actually take the leap! Jenny at MFAMB's recent talk about SquareSpace has me toying with that options...especially since my template designer hasn't returned my emails lately. :(

My videos are on Vimeo, which is (IMO) far better than Youtube when it comes to buffering.

  10. I have a hosted blog and just pay for the redirect. Never used blogger but enjoy wordpress. It's easy and pretty customizable, I think.

Always enjoy your posts!! Congrats on the 1st year! Keep 'em coming.

  11. Congratulations to a fantastic first year! I just recently discovered your blog and I'm looking forward to seeing what you have to say in year 2!!

  12. Jeannine, that is so funny that you mentioned Cote de Texas, because that is EXACTLY the blog that I was going to reference: "For example, I like reading Joni at Cote de Texas, but her pictures are just too darn big! I never click over there because of it unless her blog has been referenced elsewhere. I'd read it daily if her pictures were smaller!"

And I sort of lied for effect. My computer is 5 years old. :) But it's a Mac and I'm still on Tiger.

  13. Wow, I missed your bathroom makeover - it looks spectacular!! Congrats on a year of blogging!

  14. YAY! Congrats and Happy Blogiversary!! I love your blog and can't wait to see more..... :)
